Vice President Namadi Sambo on Monday had to openly negotiate with some thugs suspected to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who refused to allow him continue his visit to Kano.
The thugs held the vice president “hostage” for about 20 minutes before both sides, with the intervention of some party bigwigs and the police, reached a truce and Mr. Sambo was allowed to continue with his visit at the Bayero University, old Campus Kano.
The Assistant Inspector General of police in charge of zone 1, Tambari Yabo, also intervened.
A witness said dozens of armed thugs, posing as loyal party men, thronged the area where the Vice President was, taking his security detail by surprise.
The thugs shouted “Bamuayi Bamuayi Bamuayi” which means “we are no longer with you”, while others shouted “mungaji da aiki banza”, meaning “we are fed up with payless job”.
The visibly shocked Mr. Sambo had to pull himself together before an equally embarrassed AIG Tamara Yabo ordered his men to intervene and disarm the protesters.
Sensing a possible confrontation, the thugs voluntarily surrendered their arms and agreed to a peaceful settlement.
When asked by party leaders what the problem was, and why they chose to embarrass the vice president, the youth told the party leaders how they had risked their lives to keep the PDP in the state, without being paid as promised.
The Zonal Police Public Relations officer, Rabilu Ringim, did not respond to calls seeking to know police’s next line of action on the matter.
