FG Scraps Maritime University In Delta, Opts To Upgrade Transport Institute In Zaria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has cancelled the proposed Nigerian Maritime University project.
According to Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation and Aviation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed that the government is “not going ahead with the university project proposed by NIMASA” 
The Minister said that the two transport Institutes in Zaria will be considered for upgrade to University status as opposed to building a new one;  


“we have Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology, Zaria, and we have the Nigerian College of Aviation in Zaria which we could upgrade to a University status and NIMASA is proposing to build a new one.”

Amaechi, gave the hint in Abuja on Tuesday, when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, headed by Senator Ahmed Sani, to brief the senate panel on the activities of the agencies under his supervision.

“Who will attend the University? How many parent will allow their children to go to such place where it propose to site the University? What is the aim of the University that we cannot achieve in Oron where they have all the necessary infrastructure.”
Amaechi also said that the Maritime University is a waste of resources and bemoaned that ” a lot of money had already been released for the University project” He added that “there is no structure on ground but just the feasibility study.”

In strong words the Minister has requested for the refund of any contractor who has been paid to begin some level of work on the proposed Maritime university “Whoever that is holding on to the money should better return it. The Chinese company contracted, confirmed that only the feasibility study was in place.” Mr. Amaechi said.
